As the public has become more aware of the health effects of too much sugar, public opinion on added sweeteners has shifted. Sugar-conscious consumers now look for products with lower sugar content in an effort to eat more healthily.
One would think that this groundswell of public opinion would motivate food manufacturers to remove sugar from their products. Instead, sugar has simply gone underground, hiding under many innocuous names and in some very surprising places.
